Tmutorokạn, ehemalige russische Hafenstadt auf der Halbinsel Taman am Schwarzen Meer, errichtet an der Stelle der im 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. gegründeten griechischen Stadt Hermonassa. Tmutarakan war schon im 10. Jahrhundert für den Handel mit den nordkaukasischen Völkern, den Schwarzmeerstädten und Byzanz von Bedeutung. Es gehörte zum Chasarenreich bis zu dessen Zusammenbruch (965), fiel dann an das Kiewer Reich und wurde Fürstensitz (988 erstmals erwähnt), der durch den Ansturm der Polowzer im 11./12. Jahrhundert von den übrigen russischen Gebieten abgeschnitten wurde und im 12. Jahrhundert auf unbekannte Weise unterging; seit 1824 wiederholt Ausgrabungen (Kirche, Anfang 11. Jahrhundert).
